Concrete surfaces are
notorious dirt magnets. Unlike tile and marble, which are fine and
smooth, concrete is usually rough, allowing dust and dirt to
accumulate faster and stay longer. Unknowingly, your outdoor concrete
pavement may have been gathering dirt and grime for months; and now
is the time to wash the dirt away before any accidents happen. Here
are some points to bear in mind:
Expect to deal with
typical types of dirt that can be removed through scrubbing with
detergent. You can use a metal brush on thickly stained areas, but be
careful not to exert too much pressure to avoid crunching the
pebbles. Instead of using more force to take hard stains out, use
strong detergent or a cleaning agent to soften the stains.
Power washing is almost
always the key to a cleaner concrete surface. The water pressure
employed is strong enough to blast away dirt and grime, but not too
strong that it could scrape away the topmost layer of the pavement.
Professionals can surely do this better than the average homeowner.
After washing away the
dirt, apply a concrete sealer, which you can purchase from any
household supply store. In fact, you could have done this at the
beginning to keep dust from sticking on the pavement's surface. If
you don't know how to use this product, better leave such a task to
the experts.
